Fort Pierce Utilities Authority (FPUA) recently celebrated the winners of the 2018 Excellence in Environmental Stewardship Awards. This award program began in 2001 and publicly recognizes FPUA Industrial Use customers who demonstrate excellence in environmental stewardship through water conservation and pollution control.

FPUA operates its Industrial Pretreatment Program (IPP) as a condition of compliance with the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), often referred to as the Water Reclamation Facility wastewater discharge permit. This permit is issued by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP). Strict regulatory requirements accompany this permitting process. Some requirements are stringent and involve a great deal of work on the industrial customer’s part. Receiving one of these awards is no small task and the industrial customer receiving the award can be proud of this accomplishment.

There are three categories of Environmental Stewardship Awards. Silver Awards are given to Industrial Users (IU’s) that take samples weekly, report monthly and have only one excursion during the year. Gold awards are given to IU’s that have no excursions for the entire year, and Platinum awards are given to IU’s that have no excursions for two or more consecutive years. Of the ten IU’s in the IPP for the 2018 calendar year, FPUA is proud to announce that a record-breaking six IU’s received awards.

Gold Award winners include Blue Beacon International, GEM FreshCo LLC and Pride Truck Wash.

Platinum Awards were given to Orchid Island Juice Company, University of Florida IFAS and WalMart Distribution Center 7038.

The IPP Awards Ceremony was held at Fort Pierce Utilities Authority Administration Building. Mr. Harry Sherva, FPUA’s IPP Supervisor presented the awards along with Mr. Bo Hutchinson, Director of Water/Wastewater Systems. FPUA congratulates each of you on your award and sincerely appreciates your commitment and diligence to excel.

Fort Pierce Utilities Authority Island Water Reclamation Facility (IWRF) is a domestic wastewater facility that utilizes a biological treatment process. Cooperation from our industrial users is vital in the protection of the IWRF.
